ESL Article: Characteristics Of Grammar Rules

Hello everyone, in this post you will find the features of a good grammar rule according to Michael Swan, I hope you will find it useful for future situations in your job.

In our job we deal with grammar lessons almost every day. Some of them are for basic levels and some of them are for very advanced ones, but we have the same question when it comes to teaching grammar; how can I make the lesson work? Well, Michael Swan has described the characteristics of a good grammar rule. By following his suggestions we will be closer to a successful lesson.

These are the six characteristics.

1) True-
The grammar rule must bear resemblance to the reality it is describing.

2) Limited-
The rule should show clearly what the limits are for the use of a given form. Do not explain all of the usages of a single grammar if not needed.

3) Clear-
Grammar rules that lack of clarity often lead to ambiguity or confusion.

4) Simple-
The rule should be simple and does not have to cover all instances of subcategories nor all possible exceptions. Keep it simple.

5) Familiar-
The grammar explanation should try to make use of concepts that your students are already familiarized with. Keep in mind how old they are and their cultural background.

6) Relevant-
A good rule should answer only those questions that the students need answered. Do not teach something they are not interested in, this will lead to a meaningless lesson.

To conclude I just want to tell you that you should follow these suggestions by Swan, they have actually worked for me. Share your thoughts about it.
