ESL Activity: Category Chairs

Hello bloggers, today I am going to share with you a very fun and kinesthetic activity that is intended for reviewing a large set of vocabulary.

For this activity you will need some chairs (depending on how many categories you will use), sheets, tape, and flashcards (optional).

Before the activity starts, the teacher pastes on the chairs the tag of the categories. For instance, if you want to review house appliances, you can have the following tags about the rooms of the house: kitchen, living room, bedroom, garden, garage, and so forth. The rationale of this activity is to relate where we can find such appliances at home.

-Instructions-
1) The teacher divides the class into teams (2 or 3).
2) After that, each team chooses its first participant. When they are ready, the teacher shows a flashcard (or says aloud the word).
3) When students look at the flashcard (or listen to the word) they have to run and sit down on the chair with the correct room of the house. For example, let's suppose the flashcard (word) is stove. Then the correct category is kitchen. Therefore, the student who sits down on that chair, wins a point  for his / her team.

The game goes on until all the vocabulary is reviewed. Watch out for students struggling with each other in order to have a winner for a point.
